Information obtained from the English 1731 Gardeners Dictionary. Topic: BALSAMITA, Costus, or Costmary. An ancient herb, also known Alecost, Balsam, Mint geranium, or Bible Leaf, used historically as pressed book markers in bibles and books, and to prevent insects inside book pages. A medicinal and culinary herb: Used in soups, salads, stews and teas with a hint of lemon and mint. Also widely used as an herbal ointment across Europe for insect bites and wounds. English name stems from Saint Mary & associated with the Virgin Mary because of its ancient treatment for female disorders. One of our favorite period garden herb with its bright delicate leaves and tiny flower clusters to enjoy in the garden and dried for inside use. NFS
